Apple Acquires AI Startup Voysis To Improve Siri’s Natural Language Processing
Apple has acquired AI startup Voysis to improve Siri. The startup has developed a platform that lets virtual assistants better understand a person’s natural language and help improve interaction. The website of the startup has been taken down since the acquisition.
Voysis is based in Dublin, Ireland and worked on improving the digital assistants in online shopping apps to help customers find exactly what they were looking for. The company used to provide this AI to other companies so that they could incorporate it into their apps and assistants. The AI can allow customers to get relevant results for their search queries by properly understanding search terms like “I need a new LED TV” and “My budget is $1,000.”
Apple on its part confirmed the acquisition to Bloomberg.
An Apple spokesman said the company “buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”
In 2018, Voysis co-founder Peter Cahill had revealed that after the AI is trained, it takes as 25MB of memory which makes it ideal for use in smartphones without requiring an active internet connection.
The acquisition could be used to improve how well Siri understands natural language. It could also offer the Voysis platform to app developers who have already integrated their apps with Siri.
