The robocall problem is getting out of hand, and consumers have been pissed due to the issue. However, the FCC has a plan to get ahead of it. The solution is to mandate all smartphones to have a common caller ID feature, at least in the US, which makes it easier for users to know in advance how to handle fraud and marketing calls.

The US reportedly loses as much as $10 billion to robocall schemes and fraudulent calls. To plug these losses, FCC has issued a notice stating that all smartphone companies are to adopt a caller ID authentication technology called STIR/SHAKEN by the end of June 2021.

The STIR (Secure Telephone Identity Revisited)/SHAKEN (Signature-based Handling of Asserted Information Using toKENs) technology requires a caller ID signature to be initiated by the carrier where the call is originating. The information is then verified by the mobile phone carrier towards the receiving end of the voice call.

This technology makes it hard to spoof calls, and users can identify fraudulent calls and robocalls. This policy can reportedly save $3 billion and restore consumers’ trust in caller ID on their phones’ screens. This also means that the iPhones sold in the US would be required to have this caller ID feature as well.

Apple could integrate the STIR/SHAKEN feature into iOS so that all the iPhone models get access to verified caller ID technology by June 30, 2021. It would be great if such a feature is introduced in other countries as well to save people from losing time and money to call fraud and other types of robocalls.

Our Take

While apps like Truecaller already offer caller ID information, they don’t work as well on iOS as they do on Android due to Apple’s limitations on its smartphone platform. This is why FCC’s new plan is particularly great for iPhones.
