iOS 13.4 Beta 3 Reveals Over-the-Air OS Recovery Might Come to iPhones
Apple released the third beta version of iOS 13.4 for developers, and it looks like the company is testing an important feature for not just iPhones, but also other products such as iPads, iPods, Apple Watches, and HomePods.
The biggest tech firm in the world is working on an internet recovery system called ‘OS Recovery’ for the iPhone. The folks over at 9To5Mac unearthed the evidence related to the unannounced feature. It will potentially come in handy when an iPad or an iPhone stops working, and it needs the firmware to be restored.
Usually, a computer running macOS or Windows is needed to restore an iPad’s or an iPhone’s firmware. However, Apple might be looking to remove that requirement by embedding an internet recovery system, similar to the feature that is present inside macOS for years now.
As iOS or iPadOS running devices are reducing their reliance on computers, the Cupertino-based tech giant might be trying to give such devices their own internet-based recovery system. This feature could also work on the rumored iPhone, which doesn’t have a Lightning or a USB Type-C port at all.
The OS Recovery feature might work over the internet (over-the-air) as well as connecting an iPhone or an iPad to another similar device via USB (similar to Apple’s Migration Tool). The feature is not yet active, and there’s a possibility of Apple scrapping it before the public release of iOS.
Such a feature might be even more useful for devices like the Apple Watch or the HomePod, which don’t have any connector to connect to a computer for restoring the firmware. Usually, such devices needed to be taken to Apple-certified service centers if they need a firmware restore. Firmware on those devices could potentially be re-installed via the OS Recover feature.
