Apple Watch Fall Detection Feature Comes to the Rescue of Hikers
Another day, another life. Apple Watch is no stranger when it comes to saving lives. The fall detection and ECG feature has saved many lives and helped people emerge out of life-threatening situations. A New Jersey man and his partner fell down a cliff while hiking and Apple Watch saved their lives by dialing 911.
James Prudenciano and his date Paige Paruso took a detour from the trail. Soon they realized that they had mistaken drop off into the Navesink River as a short cliff. The setting sun made it difficult for the hikers to see what is ahead.
We got to the bottom and that’s when it was life or death,” Prudenciano told News 12. “I looked down and I noticed it was a straight drop to rocks and water.
James fell on a rock and fractured his back while Paruso sustained minor injuries after falling into the river. James recalled the horror and had felt that his end is nearing.
“I was screaming that I’m going to die because I really felt I was going to die,” he said in an interview with News 12. “There was no way out of this for me. I literally said my last goodbyes.”
This is when Apple Watch sprung into action and dialed 911. It is worth noting that Apple Watch Series 4 and above come with a fall detection feature. It detects when the user has taken a hard fall and will ask the user if they want to contact 911. If the user is immobile for longer than a minute the Apple Watch is programmed to automatically call 911 and provide them with user’s coordinates.
