Intel Reportedly in Talks with a Potential Buyer for 8,500 Wireless Patents
Weeks ago Intel had put nearly 8,500 wireless patents for auction. Now Intel has taken the patents off the market and is allegedly entering into negotiation with an unnamed buyer.
Intel had put up 8,500 patent asset portfolio for sale and this includes 6,000 patents related to 3G, 4G, and 5G wireless technology. The remaining 1,700 patents are related to the implementation of wireless technologies.
Intel gave no indication of who the interested bidder might be; whether, for example, it is an operating company acting on its own, a consortium or an investor play. However, given the reports of Apple’s interest in the chipmaker’s overall smartphone modem business, the iPhone giant must be seen as among the most likely bidders.
Apple is expected to have a better idea of how profitable and valuable Intel’s wireless assets are. The company has been dealing with Intel for quite some time and this is something that will help Apple. It is also worth noting that for a company like Apple it is relatively easy to come up with the money needed for the auction. That being said, private investors might need some time to gather the resources needed for the auction.
It is no secret that Apple is developing its own cellular modems which will be ready in the next couple of years. Needless to say, Intel’s wireless assets will be of great value for Apple and will also help them with the launch of 5G iPhones in the future. Earlier this year, Intel announced its departure from 5G modem business. Meanwhile, Apple has struck a deal with Qualcomm thus securing the supply of 5G modem for future iPhones.
