Microsoft Teases ‘Minecraft’ in AR for Phones
Microsoft hosted its keynote for its developers conference, BUILD 2019, today. The company decided to close things out with a video, teasing at a potentially massive new avenue for the popular game Minecraft.
The video in question shows Minecraft creative director Saxs Persson leaves a phone on a bench outside the Washington State Convention Center, the site of BUILD 2019. A little while after that, a passerby picks up the phone and just so happens to see an augmented reality version of Minecraft running on the phone. And this is an older Samsung-branded smartphone, which may or may not matter to what devices this version of the popular game is available on.
We get to see a pig in the video, along with two human-sized creatures as well. Unfortunately, there is not a lot to go on here because Microsoft is holding off until later this month to announce anything. We don’t have long to wait, though. On May 17, the 10th anniversary of Minecraft, the company says it will announce what this AR version of the game is, along with additional details.
This could be huge for Microsoft and Minecraft. It all comes down to what the game actually is and what it offers for players. Could this take on Pokémon GO? Or what about the forthcoming Harry Potter: Wizards Unite from Niantic, the makers of the popular Pokémon AR game?
Would you be excited about an AR-based Minecraft?
